Whether examining government conduct or failures within the civil and criminal justice systems, each story requires substantial investment in document analysis, evidence gathering, source development, and in-depth interviews to ensure factual accuracy and completeness.
In limited circumstances, investigative reporting involving extensive research into complex civil or criminal cases may be conducted pursuant to a project fee. Project fees compensate only for the time and resources required to perform in-depth research and reporting. They do not influence editorial judgment, factual findings, conclusions, or publication decisions.
Society of Professional Journalists standards serve as a guiding framework for accuracy, independence, and accountability, and The Current Report adheres to those principles where they apply to investigative journalism. Membership in SPJ reflects a commitment to factual reporting, verification, and public-interest journalism. However, certain guidelines, such as full source attribution or disclosure of material connections, do not universally apply to investigative reporting, particularly where source confidentiality is essential to protect individuals from retaliation or legal harm. Likewise, funding sources connected to civil or criminal court matters may remain confidential as disclosure is not required by law and funding exerts no influence over editorial judgment, factual findings, or the completed investigation. All final editorial approval is exclusively exercised by The Current Report.
