CAPTAIN MIKE BORNMAN - MY PRIORITIES
CAPTAIN MIKE BORNMAN
Candidate for Los Angeles County Sheriff 2026
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is facing significant challenges, including deteriorating infrastructure, declining morale, and decreasing public support. It is clear that the department requires a new direction and strong leadership to address these critical issues.
PRIORITIES
✅ Comprehensive Forensic Audit: I will initiate a complete forensic audit of every dollar spent by the LASD. It’s essential to understand not only how much is being spent but also where and why. There are likely outdated budget items that no longer serve our community, while crucial needs today may be underfunded.

✅ Employee Health and Wellness: We must prioritize the well-being of our personnel. With 12 department-related suicides under the current administration, we have a tragic national record. Many employees are overworked, facing forced overtime and unable to take necessary days off. We need to create a supportive environment that helps retain and recruit dedicated professionals.

✅ Revitalizing Infrastructure: Our infrastructure is crumbling. At one point this year, less than 10% of the LASD bus fleet was operational, hampering our ability to transport inmates to court. Our Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system has been malfunctioning for months, and the recent 911 system crash left residents without emergency assistance. We must address these failures urgently.

✅ Streamlining CCW Permits: The process for concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits is currently taking over 18 months, far exceeding the expected 90-120 days. This delay is unacceptable, and I will work to expedite the process and address the federal investigation into our department’s practices.

✅ Addressing Illegal Immigration: While the federal government is responsible for immigration enforcement, we will focus on individuals illegally in the country who are charged with violent felonies or serious misdemeanors. We will protect our residents from those who threaten community safety, regardless of their immigration status.

✅ Resolving the Deputy Gang Issue: It is essential to confront the issue of deputy gangs within the department. I will enforce existing policies and new state laws prohibiting participation in such groups. Clear boundaries will be established, and any violations will result in discipline to foster a safer work environment.

✅ Rebuilding Community Relationships: We must restore trust with the public. The current administration has failed to address the rising anti-police sentiment. I am committed to engaging with our community and fostering positive relationships to support our personnel and their work.

✅ Restoring Faith in Leadership: Trust between deputy line personnel and administration has deteriorated. Through focused and transparent leadership, we can rebuild this trust and create a more unified department.

✅ Comprehensive Personnel Review: We need to reassess personnel allocations, ensuring the right number of Custody Assistants and deputies are in place to meet operational needs. Positions that are unfunded should be evaluated and returned to their respective units.

✅ Strong and Consistent Leadership: I will empower our deputies to perform their duties effectively. The current administration has been slow to respond to critical situations and has not adequately supported our personnel during unfair attacks.

✅ Safe and Constitutional Jail Operations: We must ensure our jails operate safely and constitutionally. By providing high-quality educational and vocational opportunities, including partnerships with trade schools, we can help inmates acquire skills that will aid their reintegration into society and reduce recidivism.
Together, we can restore the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to a position of trust, respect, and effectiveness. I am committed to leading this change for the benefit of our community and the dedicated professionals who serve it.
